Dogs, Horses and Indian: A History of Blood Quantum with Heather Bruegl

Monday, November 237:00—8:30 PMONLINE EVENTNorthville District Library212 West Cady St, Northville, MI, 48167

What is blood quantum? Why do Native Americans have to keep track of it? What does it mean? And why are Native Americans the only human group that must keep track of blood quantum? Blood quantum has been something that Native Americans have had to keep track of since colonization. This was a way for the United States government to limit citizenship. It has now been viewed as a slow genocide of the American Indian. We will explore this idea of blood quantum and what is has done to the individual Native American as well as what it has done to tribes and how it affects treaty rights.

Heather Bruegl, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, is a graduate of Madonna University in Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in U.S. History.
